1st day: Marrakech – Dades Gorges
Your desert trip from Marrakech to Merzouga starts with a departure in the morning from your riad towards Dades Gorges traveling across the admirably high and towering Atlas Mountains and over the famous Tizi-n-Tichka pass, the highest mountains peak in Africa.
All along the road, there will be stops at panoramic viewpoints for breaks, to take photos, and to admire the breath-taking views of the fertile valleys, full of colorful roses, olive trees and herds of goats, and the adobe-built Berber villages perched on the snow-topped mountains, sometimes barely distinguishable from the mountains themselves.
After the Tizi-n-Tichka pass, a side road leads to the former palatial residence, Kasbah Telouet. Visit the kasbah to discover Moroccan tiling art and wood craftsmanship.
Driving further south, you arrive at the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a backdrop for many Hollywood blockbusters including “Gladiator”, “Alexander”, and some scenes of the famous TV series “Game of Thrones”. After lunch, a visit is scheduled for the Kasbah with a local guide who will provide historical insights and points out at interesting features.
In the afternoon, we drive past Ouarzazate and the Oasis of Skoura, where we stop to explore the fortified Kasbah Amredhil, which has been reconstructed to makes a panoramic view situated in the side of the valley and standing tall among the palm trees.
From here, the road takes us through the Road of a Thousand Kasbah and then the Valley of the Roses as far as Kel’aa M’gouna, where we pay a visit to a women co-operative manufacturing local roses cosmetic from abundant flowers. Afterward, we arrive at Dades Gorges, where a beautiful guest-house at the edge of the valley offers dinner and overnight.
